The three-time Olympic medalist won gold in the men's kayaking singles 1,000-metre race Saturday in Racice, Czech Republic, the first event of the World Cup canoe and kayak circuit. Van Koeverden, 27, completed the 1,000m race in a time of 3:38.492. Denmark's Rene HolgtenPoulsen was second in 3:39.969, followed by Sweden's Anders Gustavsson (3:40.355). Saturday's win was the 22nd World Cup victory of the Loyola grad's career. Van Koeverden placed ninth in Sunday's 500m final. Oakville's Greg Westlake scored twice and set up another to lead Canada to an 8-0 victory over Germany Sunday at the IPC sledge hockey world championships. Westlake got Canada rolling with a shorthanded goal -- the only goal of the opening period -- and then set up Brad Bowden's power-play goal in the second. Westlake got his second goal of the game to extend Canada's lead to 5-0 in the third. Canada opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over the host Czech Republic team on Saturday.
