Six Nations has pulled away with a 6-1 start to the season, but nine teams are within five points of the conference-leading Rebels. That includes the Oakville Buzz, which owns a 4-2 mark after splitting a pair of home games last weekend. Oakville defeated the St. Catharines Spartans 7-3 Friday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, then fell 7-6 to the Owen Sound North Stars two days later. The Buzz is in a three-way tie for third in the South West Division with eight points, but is only a point ahead of Elora, Orangeville and Guelph for the final spot in the conference playoffs. Mike Dawson led Oakville scorers on the weekend, striking for four points in each of the games (two goals, two assists Friday and a goal, three assists Sunday). Alex Kruse also scored twice Friday for the Buzz, with Robert Bentivegna and Braden Gallant netting singles. Mark White, Dylan Gilbert and Gallant contributed two assists each against St. Catharines. Sunday, the Buzz got goals from Brad Galante, Jamie Elliott, Gilbert, Kruse and Bentivegna. Cam Watts played goal in both games for Oakville, which will host Six Nations Friday at Glen Abbey (an 8 p.m. start). The Buzz will visit Orangeville the following evening. SEASON STARTER: Oakville Crusaders' Kristian Evans (with ball) tries to power through the tackles of two Stoney Creek opponents Saturday at Crusader Park. The local men's firsts team dropped its season opener 30-29 to the Camels. It was a trying day for the Crusaders, whose two women's teams both lost games against the Oshawa Vikings earlier in the day. GRAHAM PAINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER A's offence awakens late in win over Brants The Oakville A's broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning and added six more runs in the bottom of the eighth, downing the Burlington Brants 8-1 Monday in Central Ontario Baseball Association senior play at Oakville Park. Matt Chisamore earned the victory for the A's, finishing the game with three scoreless innings and striking out four. Marc Walton started the contest for Oakville, allowing one earned run in six innings while fanning eight. The A's offence was led by a three-hit effort from Jeff Jarockis, who clubbed his second home run in as many games. Mike Modestino added two hits, including a double in his first at-bat of the season, as Oakville rebounded from a 10-3 rain-shortened loss Friday in Dundas. Alex Hawley took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs -- four of those $ earned -- in three and two-thirds innings. Jarockis, last year's league home run champion, hit his first round-tripper of the year, and Oakville centre fielder Matt Bekar threw out a Dundas runner at home early in the game. Oakville (2-1) is not scheduled to see action until Monday, when the A's host Brampton for a Victoria Day doubleheader. The opening game is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at Oakville Park.
