This is the first time the piece, which consists of five movements, will be performed in its entirety. One movement has not yet been performed in public, making the April concert its world premiere. Demuynck composed the work between 2006-07. "It was a really special process to write this piece, then rearrange it for Masterworks and getting to perform it here makes it even more special," he said. Ah My Love Flutters is based on a French poem of the same name, Ah Voltige Mon Amour, by black poet Gérard Étienne (1936-2008). Demuynck came across the poem in a library and was transfixed by its mes- sage and subject matter. "He wrote this poem when he was living in Haiti," he said. "It's quite a long love poem and my 25-minute suite is a complete setting of the poem. It's mostly rapturous love poetry, and the music reflects that, but there's a small part of the poem that reflects his experiences as a political prisoner.
