OAKVILLE BEAVER Saturday, April 4, 2009 · 24 Give your child the best start possible Every parent wants the best for their child. To help children get the most out of their education, Nottinghill Co-operative Preschool is offering an exciting new program for junior kindergarten students this September JK Jumpstart. JK Jumpstart is an enrichment program for children already enrolled in JK at their local elementary school. Designed to enhance the curriculum taught at elementary school, the program holds a special emphasis on early reading and math. The program runs two afternoons per week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. During this time students are stimulated with activities in two specially designed classrooms. Children will learn their letters and sounds in an enjoyable, multi-sensory way through the use of the well known phonics programs Explode the Code and Jolly Phonics. JK Jumpstart will also use a variety of methods to teach numeracy, science, basic French and music. It's well known that the early years of a child's life are crucial to their longterm success. With this in mind, Nottinghill designed JK Jumpstart to give children individual attention on the fundamentals in a small, 7:1 studentteacher ratio class setting. Having had success with a similar program for Senior Kindergarten students called Readers Count, Nottinghill staff feels that JK Jumpstart will follow suit. "As we have seen in our popular Readers Count program, parents understand the importance of giving their children the best opportunities to master the fundamentals of the kindergarten curriculum," says Amy Daca, President of the Nottinghill Board of Directors. "Our programs are not just about reinforcing the academics, but about building self-esteem and confidence too. We are very excited about our new JK Jumpstart program and have no doubt it will be as successful as our Readers Count and other preschool programs." Nottinghill was founded in 1961 as Oakville's very first co-operative preschool. Being a co-operative, the school is a non-profit corporation owned and operated by its members the parents and students registered at the school.
