OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 3, 2009 · 4 Which bank has the fastest bed in town? By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF If Oakville's six major financial institutions have anything to do with it, you can bank on getting a bed at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). For the fourth year, Oakville's six major banks are putting their wheels in motion to kick off the annual Bank Bed Challenge in support of OTMH. Starting today, the banks will be fundraising for the next month to raise the cash and will culminate the effort on Sunday, May 3 when, at 9 a.m., bank employees will race hospital beds through downtown Oakville. Emcee for the race will be Jason Portuondo of Sportsnet. After raising nearly $300,000 over the last three years, the banks are once again putting their fiercely competitive spirits to the test. Yet, they're not competing to win customers. And while they are competing with one another for various titles -- from top fundraiser, race champion and best-decorated bed to team spirit -- they are competing with the goal of together raising cash to buy beds for OTMH. With the price tag of hospital beds ranging from $12,000 for an acute care bed, to upwards of $50,000 for an intensive care bed, it's an expensive proposition. To date, the banks have raised $287,000 and it has purchased more than 25 beds at OTMH. More than 40 branches from the six banks -- CIBC, BMO Bank of Montreal, ScotiaBank, Royal Bank, TD Canada Trust and HSBC -- are taking RIZIERO VERTOILLI / OAKVILLE BEAVER DUELING BANKERS: Representatives from Oakville's six major banks (l-r) Scott McDermid, CIBC, Brian Wood, TD, Lynn McDougall, RBC, Julie Petendra, BMO, Kerith McLeod, Scotiabank, and Nigel Soares, HSBC teamed up to launch the fourth annual Bank Bed Challenge to raise funds for new patient beds at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
