17 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 3, 2009 Friends of the Library book sale in the cards this month I f you love books and are partial to a bargain or two, why not stop by the Friends of the Oakville Public Library Spring Book Sale and stock up on some new reading material? By visiting the book sale and buying some excellent second-hand reads, you are also supporting both your local community and our excellent library services. Twice a year, the Friends of the Oakville Public Library organizes and hosts a book sale to raise much needed funds for several library programs and services that could not otherwise be offered. Book sales are just one of the innovative ways in which the Friends of the Library raises funds to support the Oakville Public Library. This year, Friends of the Oakville Public Library provided more than $29,000 to programs such as the hugely popular TD Summer Reading. The program encourages children to read over the summer months by incorporating fun themes and reading incentives for reporting on books read. More than 4,400 children in Oakville read more than 30,000 books in summer 2008 -- quite an accomplishment. The Friends also provides support for our Teen Writing Contest `Write2Xpress,' creating an opportunity for teens to submit their own works and win great prizes. The Battle of the Books Competition, which involves students and their schools in a trivia competition based on books is another Friends-supported endeavor and provides an effective environment for children to feel involved and confident as a member of a team. In 2009, The Friends of the Oakville Public Library will also support the Teen Book Club and the Every Child Ready to Read program, amongst others. The Spring Book Sale runs from April 15 April 19 and is held at the Oakville Public Library, Central Branch Auditorium on the 2nd Floor, 120 Navy St. On Wednesday, April 15, from 6-9 p.m., the sale is exclusively for Friends of the Library members. However, if you would like to become a member, you can always purchase a membership at the book sale for $10.
