17 OAKVILLE BEAVER · Friday, March 6, 2009 Working to get, and keep, Halton residents active ctive Halton invites local physicians to participate in two Foundation for Medical Practice Education workshops March 25. The workshops are free and approved for four MAINPRO-C credits by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. If you are a physician practicing in Halton, register at www.choices4health.org/physi ciansworkshop. The first workshop is Diabetes: Screen and Prevention for Type 2. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic A disease reaching epidemic proportions worldwide. Lifestyle changes that include physical activity can delay or even prevent type 2 diabetes. Physicians will learn the latest information about how to screen and prevent type 2 diabetes. The second workshop is Physical Activity for Children and Youth. Less than 50 per cent of children and youths get the recommended amount of physical activity. Health Canada recommends they participate in 60 minutes of moderate activity and 30 minutes of vigorous activity every day. This workshop is designed to help physicians promote physical activity to parents, children and youths. Research suggests physicians are very influential when trying to get people to improve their health. The July 2008 issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports report that physicians can get those who are the least active to be more active. Physicians gave 6,300 patients physical activity prescriptions. After three months the largest increase in physical activity was found in those who were least active at the beginning of the study. This is a very important finding because those who are inactive have the most to gain when they go from being sedentary to active -- just 30 minutes of walking a day can improve health. Active Halton has an ambitious plan to increase the physical activity levels of Halton res- idents by 20 per cent by 2012. We are working together to accomplish our goal by facilitating workshops, sharing information and resource, networking with physical activity providers and educating the community. Active Halton is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Choices 4 Health.
