15 OAKVILLE BEAVER · Friday, March 6, 2009 Students successfully raise their voices at IRHS By Elizabeth Smurlick GRADE 12, IROQUOIS RIDGE H.S. T he Raise Your Voice Conference held Feb. 25 at Iroquois Ridge High School was a great suc- cess. It was led by the school's Student Voice Committee and involved other school groups such as Global Issues and the Debate team. The conference brought together eight schools from across the Halton District School Board, including E.C. Drury, White Oaks and Oakville Trafalgar. About 130 students attended while 1,200 students from Iroquois Ridge and other schools attended the opening assembly. The morning assembly featured Louise Kent from Free the Children and Me to We. Through inspirational words, videos and song, Louise Kent brought tremendous spirit to the teenaged crowd. The assembly ended with almost everyone standing up, dancing and clapping to Louise's song Me to We. Students selected three workshops to attend throughout the day. The first session of workshops had the theme of politics. I both attended and helped out with the Youth Parliament of Canada workshop. A mock parliament and other student-run initiatives taught our groups how to make our voices heard. Amnesty International also ran a workshop. Those who attended this were given a large orange sticker with the Amnesty International logo. Learning about Amnesty, this group also had the opportunity to write letters for change. The Debate workshop was equally entertaining and filled with opinion and eloquence. The second workshop session dealt with history. William Bell honoured our school with his presence in the History i n Literature workshop. There was a Raise Your Voice with Music workshop where Ibrahim Quereshi presented an excellent rap about spreading our voice and how we can change the world. We witnessed the history of music with an excellent presentation and enjoyed clips of music videos that made bold statements and revolutionized music. Another workshop entitled Great Speeches created a lot of enthusiasm. The final workshops revolved around Global Issues. conference, E.C. The leaders behind MOMO did an excellent job and the workshop was very well received. In addition, there was also a workshop run by IRHS's Global Issues Council that revolved around the theme of the 30-Hour Famine. The activities created student awareness with how difficult basic needs are to achieve when living in underdeveloped countries. Through open discussions and student involvements with their own schools, we all learned how to help. The program was a huge success. Many students signed up to receive future information about Me to We. A conference survey from Student Voice was distributed to obtain information on the day's events. The result was tons of positive feedback. As a result of the success of our make their dream a reality. We all have a voice in creating change. Our conference is just the beginning. Think Green.
