INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY Celebrate with the World this March 8 5,000 women marched through New York City in 1908 demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. 100 years on, the pertinence of this event is honoured through International Women's Day (IWD) 2009 Canadian theme `Strong Leadership. Strong Women. Strong World: Equality.' In just two years, 2011 will see IWD's Centenary 100 years of women's united action for global equality and change. Organizations around the world have already commenced planning for their IWD Centenary Celebrations. The first IWD was launched on March 8, 1911 in Copenhagen by Clara Zetkin, Leader of the `Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany. This followed many years of women's campaigning dating back to British MP, John Stuart Mill, the first person in Parliament calling for women's right to vote. On September 19, 1893 New Zealand became the first self-governing nation in the world to give women the right to vote. IWD will be celebrated on Sunday March 8 by millions of men, women and children across the globe. IWD was established by the United Nations in 1977, with roots dating back to the early 1900's. IWD began as an event to draw attention to the plight of overworked, underpaid women, but has evolved into much more as time has progressed. The day celebrates the women's rights victories that have been achieved throughout history, and reminds us of the battles that have yet to be won. Each year, millions of women come together in celebration regardless of race, social background or any other divisions. IWD offers a gentle reminder that there are still many women struggling for basic rights, education and health care around the world. By joining together in perseverance and dedication women around the world can continue to overcome discrimination and gender-based biases that have held them back for years. P.O. Through her entry into a male dominated landscaping business in 1971 she quietly commanded respect and equal rights through actions. "Early in my career, I often arrived to do a quotation for services and the customer would ask if my father or my husband was coming to do the quote. When I replied, no I am here to help you....what can I do for you...I rarely lost their confidence in me". Kathy went on to take over the business she and her late husband started following his sudden death in 1993. Since then she has coached and mentored the staff and management at Green Thumb to be a top rate customer service driven business. Kathy's son-in-law, Todd Rainey and right arm, Melanie Newport work as a team with her to continue building the landscaping business. This leaves Kathy the opportunity to devote time and energy to her passion, The Bronze Frog Gallery. To walk into the that.
