IWD will be celebrated on Sunday March 8 by millions of men, women and children across the globe. IWD was established by the United Nations in 1977, with roots dating back to the early 1900's. IWD began as an event to draw attention to the plight of overworked, underpaid women, but has evolved into much more as time has progressed. The day celebrates the women's rights victories that have been achieved throughout history, and reminds us of the battles that have yet to be won. Each year, millions of women come together in celebration regardless of race, social background or any other divisions. IWD offers a gentle reminder that there are still many women struggling for basic rights, education and health care around the world.
