8 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 27, 2009 www.oakvillebeaver.com Facelift for Westwood Park RESIDENTIAL INTENSIFICATION WORKSHOP March 4, 2009, 79 p.m. Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road, Trafalgar Room As part of the Livable Oakville (new official plan), the Town is undertaking several major studies including a Residential Intensification Study. The study area includes all the lands south of Dundas Street within the built boundary that are not included in another major study currently underway, these being, Bronte Village, Kerr Village, Uptown Core and Midtown Oakville. The purpose of this workshop is to receive feedback on the Residential Intensification Study-Background Analysis and Directions Report. The report is currently available for review on the Town's website. Input generated from the discussion will assist in developing updated residential infill and intensification policies for the new official plan. The agenda for the workshop includes: Study-Background Analysis and Directions Report Oakville's Community Services Committee has voted to approve a more than $1.6 million revitalization plan for Westwood Park. The proposed design, submitted to the committee during its Tuesday night meeting, would turn the 1.68 acre park, located at the intersection of Kerr and Bond Streets, into a community hub. Among the features illustrated in the design is an open air gazebo situated in a central plaza, which would also house a number of themed flowerbeds and benches. This plaza would be accessed by four walkways approaching it from each corner of the park. Outside this plaza are four open lawn areas with the entire park enclosed by a variety of trees surrounding the park's perimeter. Arrivals! The process of introducing improvements to the park dates back to 2006 when representatives from the West River Residents' Association approached the Town with several requests for changes to the park. As a result, the Town undertook several measures intended to open up the park to visitors including the removal of old chain link fencing that contained the park on two sides and a ball diamond backstop that was seldom used for organized minor baseball. Community consultations followed in 2007, as part of the Kerr Street Revitalization Study, with residents asked to give input on what type of park they would like to see at the Westwood location. Three options up for consideration eventually gave way to the one the Community Services Committee had before it Tuesday night. Ward 5 Councillor Marc Grant said the community deserves something like the proposed park, but voiced concerns about the perimeter of trees. Grant said passing police cruisers would not be able to see inside the park if the trees were too close together. Town staff reassured Grant that the trees would be far enough apart to see into the park. Ward 2 Councillor Cathy Duddeck requested information on when the park could be put in place, but staff was unable to give estimates. Pending approval by Town Council on Monday the project will be referred to the budget committee for consideration as part of the 2009-2018 capital forecast.
