www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 14, 2009 - 5 CANADIAN GOVERNMENT CERTIFIED CANADIAN DIAMONDS Environment group gets funding to turn people on to solar power By Tim Foran METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP PUBLIC AUCTION A local environmental group is using federal funds to switch local residents on to the possibilities of solar power. The Halton Environmental Network announced last week the reception of $53,000 from Environment Canada's EcoAction Community Funding Program, which will be used to support the advocacy efforts of its Halton Residential Solar Project (HSRP). "Without question, green power is the way of the future, even if for some the idea seems too innovative to fully contemplate, or even comprehend," said Halton MP and Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt. "Now, they can count on the Halton Residential Solar Project for answers to their questions and for advice on how to make the switch to solar energy." Raitt made the funding announcement at the site of one of the project's first solar photovoltaic installations. The Milton farm of Monika Caemmerer and Heinz Schweistries was recently outfitted with a 9.5 kilowatt solar array, which can produce an average of 40 kilowatt hours of electricity per day, according to the installer Scott Henderson. Henderson, who owns the Owen Sound office of Sun Volts Unlimited, said the average Canadian home will use only 10 to 30 kilowatt hours a day. Under the province's renewable energy Standard Offer program, the farm will be paid 42 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity it produces, while only paying 5 to 6 cents for the electricity it uses, according to the HRSP. "This is a system that will pay for itself," said Henderson of the $76,000 installation. "Renewable energy is here today." It isn't necessary for residents to invest in such a large installation, Henderson said. He noted the company offers small 700-watt solar arrays that cost under $10,000. Such a system would likely qualify for the federal government's 15 per cent home renovation tax credit, announced in the recent budget, said Henderson, as well as a rebate on the provincial sales tax. For businesses, the financial benefits are even greater as they qualify for a 50 per cent capital cost allowance on the installation of renewable energy systems, Henderson added. In an effort to educate the public about the benefits of solar power as well as assisting them through the purchasing and installation process, the HSRP will be holding a series of evening (7-9 p.m.) public meetings in Halton municipalities. They include: · Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Oakville Town Hall, South Atrium · Thursday, Feb.19 at the Burlington Central Library, Centennial Hall · Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Georgetown Cultural Centre, Gallery Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Milton Sports Centre, Banquet Room The project will also host a solar fair Saturday, March 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Halton Regional Centre auditorium on Bronte Road.
