www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 13, 2009 - 7 Inconsiderate dog walkers ruining Oakville's trails As an almost weekly visitor to Oakville, I usually take advantage of walking my sporting dogs on the trails along the Sixteen-Mile Creek north of Upper Middle Road. These weekly walks allow me to escape from the hustle and bustle of Oakville and allow my dogs the chance to walk off of the sidewalks. This past weekend, I walked both Saturday and Sunday mornings. What beautiful days they were with warmer weather and some sunshine. However, as a diligent dog owner who has invested hundreds LETTER TO THE EDITOR of hours training her dogs to be well socialized, well mannered and able to recall consistently, wait patiently beside me just off the trail while other trail users (who may not like or be afraid of dogs) pass us by and carry a multitude of smallish bags to clean up after my dogs, I was incredibly disappointed to see a consistent trail of dog droppings on the trail. Both days I stopped repeatedly to kick other dogs' droppings off the trail as it is both unsightly and unhealthy. Today, as I was nearing the end of my walk, I picked up a rather large dropping less than one metre away from a garbage can. Today, a runner surely wanting to enjoy his run on a tidy trail was quite firm in telling me to clean up after my dogs. I replied that not only did I have my dogs' deposits in a bag in my hand, but also that of another person's dog; a pink bag filled with droppings and left on the trail. I was doing my best to tidy up the messes of others. Please dog walkers on this trail, bring your poop bags and use them. Dog walkers will have a very bad reputation indeed if the trails are left in such a state. Now, I'm back to taking my morning walks in Newmarket where I'll continue carrying my plethora of bags to clean up after my dogs and bring it home to deposit in my green bin. Cleaning up after one's dog is only a teeny, tiny part of dog ownership -- please, just do it. JULIE A.
