36 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 4, 2009 www.oakvillebeaver.com Vytis edges Guelph to win hoops tournament The Oakville Vytis Break major bantam boys' AAA basketball team won all five of its games to earn gold at the Guelph Phoenix tournament. The Vytis edged Guelph Phoenix #1 58-57 in overtime in the championship game. Jake Babic and Matthew Thompson led Oakville in scoring in the title match. After going 3-0 in round-robin competition, Oakville pounded the York South Silver Knights by 21 points in the semifinal. Other members of the team are Perry Billard, Owen Coulthard, Jaren Kerr, Chris Lam, Max Lambert, Spencer Marion, Liam McCormick, Rasheed Smith and Dennis Xu. Terry Coulthard coaches the Vytis, assisted by Rohan Thompson. The team will play in seven more tournaments this season before the provincial championships, slated for April in London. EAGLES FLY HIGH: The Oakville novice red Eagles were crowned champions at the recent London Minor Hockey Association Thunder Classic tournament. Novice red Eagles rally in final game Winning four of their five games in a three-day span, the Oakville novice red Eagles earned the championship at the recent London Minor Hockey Association Thunder Classic tournament. The Eagles scored the winning goal in the final with three minutes to go in regulation, capping off a four-goal rally after falling behind Port Credit 4-1 in the first period. Paul Franko was named MVP of the championship game, while Eagles goalie Max Perry and leading scorer Samuel Roy shared tournament MVP honours. Earlier at the competition, Oakville posted wins over clubs from Mississauga and Cambridge. Other members of the team are Joel Cerny, Lukas Radinovic, Liam Deschamps, Carter Locke, Ryan Radovich, Michael Desautels, Chad Nadin, Jacob White, Michael Syrota, Ian Headrick, Colton Bales, Aidan Ecclestone and Ryan Skjarum.
