8 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 30, 2009 www.oakvillebeaver.com Dual-track schools would solve French immersion overcrowding problems Continued from page 6 school is now over-capacity and now some children will have to move again. Perhaps the HDSB can grandfather some of the students who have moved the most when the current decision is made. The parents at École Forest Trail (EFT) should re-examine their steadfast refusal to go to multiple dual-track schools, that could have enabled some of their children to have French immersion without moving from their local schools in the first place. With more dual-track schools there is more stability for the children. The EFT school council has represented that a majority of their families prefer single track FI. What they haven't told the public is that, based on their own parent survey, only 1013 per cent of their families would actually leave the French immersion program if it were only offered in dual-track schools. This represents less than three per cent of our Ward 4 community. It begs the question -- what are we fighting over? It seems that if HDSB would just change to have multiple dual-track French immersion schools (as is consistent with the rest of HDSB with the noted exception of Oakville) to meet the FI demand, we could all stop wasting our time and energy over this issue and get back to rebuilding our communities. Motorist who may have hit cat responds to owner I deeply regret that your pet was rushed to the emergency hospital and had to be put down. It is quite likely that we hit your pet while travelling down Braeside Drive. Something did dash out in front of our car at approximately 8 o'clock at night. We did not see what ran in front of our car and I was shocked to read about your loss in the paper. It was my wife who said `watchout' and then something ran in front of our car. We turned, did stop and turn around, but as it was dark at night, we could not see anything on the road or in around the area. We have owned many pets over the last 20 years, and certainly would not have left the animal to suffer and would have alerted the owners had we found the animal in pain and visible at night. While I understand and share your sadness for your loss, I am equally upset and shocked to think that you would allow your pet out at night, potentially exposed to such risks as crossing a road and on a night which was also -15C. There is no bringing back your pet, but know that we are very sorry for your family's loss, and only hope that others might better understand the risks of letting pets out at night.
