www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 30, 2009 - 19 Celebration at Town Hall launches Black History Month On Wednesday, Feb. 4, the Town of Oakville will host the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) Black History Month Celebration at the Oakville Town Hall's South Atrium. From 6:30-8 p.m., there will be African drumming, a steel band and guest speakers. Oakville's Black History Exhibit will also be on display. The guest speaker will be Michele Johnson who describes herself as a child of the Jamaican peasantry, a child of formerly enslaved people. Johnson hails from deep, rural Jamaica where she says she had the good fortune to grow up with family members (both `real' and `fictive') who had or have their feet firmly planted in the soil. After attending secondary school, Michele pursued her tertiary education at the University of the West Indies (Mona, Jamaica) where she earned a B.A. and an Master of Philosophy in history. She later attended the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland) on a Fulbright scholarship; there she earned an M.A. (history) and a Ph.D. (history). She returned to Jamaica where she taught history at the University of the West Indies and in 2002 joined the faculty in the History Department at York University. At York University, Johnson teaches a variety of courses focused on the African presence in the Americas ranging from Caribbean History, through African Canadian History to wide-ranging courses titled "In Slavery and Freedom: Blacks in the Americas". Guest entertainer will be John Campbell, a singer, pianist, composer and actor with an impressive list of accomplishments. He is very active in the local music scene. The CCAH Black History Education and community outreach activities are continuing with programs not only in February, but throughout the entire year.
