www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 17, 2009 - 5 Education director wants another look at his preferred choice Continued from page 4 www.ymcaofoakville.com Palermo and Pilgrim Wood." He said that Pilgrim Wood was chosen as the English school to become a dual-track facility because of space. "Essentially, what we looked at there was it was the school that had the largest capacity free in order to maintain a minimum number of portables," he said. "We looked at both Abbey Lane and Pilgrim Wood, and the issue with Abbey Lane is that it is a smaller school to begin with and so the ability to access surplus in order to make a viable program was a challenge." Option B was also selected for its workable numbers, according to Joudrie. "Why we went with two dual-track and one single track, if you look at the numbers in the model at the end, it gives us numbers on the French stream side that we think are viable going forward," he said. "They are in the range of high two hundreds and we believe if you put the program closer to those communities, there will likely be a bigger uptake. And the low two hundreds will likely climb into the low three hundreds. The numbers can work in terms of vitality of program." Joudrie said offering two dual track schools would also make a transition period easier if the HDSB decides to adopt dual track as their only delivery method for French immersion down the road. "We've landed on this model (Option B) as the most flexible in terms of where we may end up if the board chooses to decide on a consistent approach to French immersion," he said. A frequent question posed by delegates on Wednesday night was what would happen if Option B was approved and the French immersion enrolment threshold at Pilgrim Wood exceeded 60 per cent. Joudrie said he would expect a workable solution to be found if that occurs, which he added at this point, is only hypothetical. "The intent behind this motion is when you hit set number, and that number we've identified is 60 per cent, the next (action) is for staff, the trustee and the school council to sit down and say `We've got an imbalance here, maybe we have a problem. If we do have a problem, what are reasonable options for that?'" BABY STEPS. Take those first small steps to health. Go for a walk. Take the stairs. Come for a tour. Are You Happy With Your Smile?
