The Our Kids Network has released its 2008 A Vision for Children in Halton Report Card, which measures the progress of kids and their families -- and there were some surprises. "What is especially concerning is the emergence of data suggesting that 10 per cent of 15year-olds surveyed reported experiencing symptoms of depression and almost 13 per cent of 15year-old youths have had some thoughts of suicide," said Nancy MacGillivray, executive director of the Halton Children's Aid Society and a partner on the Our Kids Network. "Suicide is frequently a consequence of untreated depression." In addition, the report card reveals that students in the lowest socio-economic status group are more likely to experience depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The report card identifies significant trends critical to quality of life for children using data compiled from many local, provincial and national sources. It was distributed to councillors at Tuesday's Regional Health and Social Services Committee, and will be presented to the public at an official launch Wednesday, Feb. 11. It'll take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Milton Sports Centre, 605 Santa Maria Blvd. "We're very proud to launch the new report card," Halton Commissioner of Social and Community Services Adelina Urbanski told committee members, adding it includes far more data than the first such report card released in 2004. Mental health is just one issue examined in the 119-page report, which covers everything from kids' health to their economic status to their family structures. The report breaks down Halton into neighbourhoods and profiles those areas, giving extensive statistics regarding kids' development, families, safety, schools and more; Milton is separated into four areas. Children from birth to 18 are looked at in this report, as opposed to the birth to six years range in the 2004 document. Key findings this time around included that: · One in five 15-year-old students is considered overweight or obese · Half the 15-year-olds are eating breakfast every day · One in six 15-year-olds reports getting the recommended amount of daily exercise · Four in five 15-year-olds have volunteered in the past year · One in 14 kids six or younger is living under the low-income cut-off line The new statistics will provide the Our Kids Network -- a group of child-focused community partners -- with information on how to continue bringing needed services to kids and their families, MacGillivray said.
