Chartwell Classic Oakville Luxury Retirement Living is inviting interested seniors to come check out the residence, said Trish White, Chartwell Oakville's marketing manager. "It's like a five-star hotel. It's very stunning," she said. The retirement home opened its doors Oct. 1 and is preparing for its grand opening in the spring of 2009. Founded in 1999, Chartwell provides retirement housing across North America. The Oakville location was established because of the community's need for more senior care, White said. "There is a need in the community for services that provide that peace of mind, to have dedicated staff around the clock that can respond in an emergency and provide assistance on a daily basis. Our mission really is to give better quality of life for our seniors." Jean Parsons, 83, lived with her daughter Kim Dixon, 48, of Oakville, before moving into the Oakville residence Oct. 6. Parsons said she and her daughter started looking for a retirement residence in June. It was a short while later that she learned of Chartwell from a friend. Once Parsons went to see the building, she said that was all she needed to make a decision. "I didn't even look at any other places to tell you the truth," she said. Parsons thought living in a retirement home would be hard to adjust to, but she said she soon found otherwise. "I felt comfortable right at first, and I think it's run excellently. The staff is just great." Since she moved in, Parsons said she has made friends, done plenty of shopping and has been getting lots of exercise. "There's something to do all the time. You could be very busy if you tried to take it all in," she laughed. Dixon said she and her other sisters come to see their mother two to three times a week, adding that they always find her in high spirits. "If she's happy, we're happy," she said. "She has security there. She's in a safe environment, and there are so many programs there and the social aspect -- being with people your own age -- is really, really important." White said the residence offers excellent dining, trips to the theatre and shopping centres, fitness programs, tai chi and professional service in dental hygiene, pharmacy, foot care and in audiology.
