Last Saturday evening, about 9 o'clock, as Mr. Nathaniel Campbell was assisting in keeping the bridge and dam at Edge Mills clear of saw logs, he was suddenly thrown into the water by a pike which he was using sticking fast in a floating log, and was instantly swept over the dam and down the rapids. A companion heard a scream from the unfortunate man, as he fell into the water since which time nothing has been seen of him, as it is impossible to recover the body until the river lowers. Mr. Campbell was about 60 years of age, and leaves a widow to mourn his decease.
On Sunday the river rose to an alarming extent and threatened the destruction of bridges and dams all of which in the vicinity of the town have been damaged to a great or less extent. The dam at McKechnies grist mill is badly broke and the bridge on Garafraxa st. had a very narrow escape and if it had not been for the efforts of a number of citizens who hauled stone and filled in the butments, would have floated off. The damage done by the freshet will be very considerable.
