52 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 26, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Get nose to beak with birds of prey at Mountsberg For fun guaranteed to `soar' above your expectations, check out Mountsberg Conservation Area's SoAR program in the New Year. Species at Risk, or SoAR, is a free program which is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), and is designed to teach students about threatened and endangered bird species in Ontario. The program is open to all schools and is linked to the Grades 4 and 7 Ontario Ministry of Education's Science curriculum. SoAR also helps to highlight the efforts of agencies such as Conservation Halton, which assists in maintaining and rebuilding populations of threatened birds and other species through various habitat projects. Mountsberg staff will transport live birds of prey such as barn owls and peregrine falcons from the Raptor Centre to interested schools and deliver in-class presentations which include audio video aspects as well as interaction with the birds. The presentations will include information regarding the range of species affected, habitat issues, and laws that protect endangered species. A selection of native species will also be brought along, and a set of posters featuring the at risk birds will be provided to every participant. The Species at Risk poster series (which was developed by Conservation Halton late this fall), along with signs will be posted at the authority's six conservation areas to help raise awareness among the 600,000 annual visitors who enjoy the areas. Dolf Dejong, Manager of both Mountsberg and Crawford Lake Conservation Areas, explains the importance of the program, saying, "This `nose to beak' experience will assist students in understanding current threats to wildlife, and teach them how they can help to ensure that these species have a future here in Ontario." Dejong details that the main goal of the program is to, "Inspire 4,500 students to become interested in and involved with Species at Risk by offering SoAR free of charge to approximately 180 classrooms across Halton Region and the GTA." Don't let this amazing opportunity `fly by'! The program will only be offered from January until early February of 2009, so book now as space is limited. To sign your class up for the program, call Mountsberg at 905-854-2276 or book online at www.conservationhalton.on.ca. Conservation Halton is the community based environmental agency that protects, restores, and manages the natural resources in its watershed. The organization has staff that includes ecologists, land use planners, engineers, foresters, enforcement officers and educators along with a network of volunteers who are guided by a board of directors comprised of municipally elected and appointed citizens. Conservation Halton is recognized for its stewardship of creeks, forests and Niagara Escarpment lands through science based programs and services. Sursaut Dance Co.
