www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 5, 2008 - 39 The Oakville YMCA celebration of Peace Week hit a high point as the charitable association awarded its first peace medallion. The award, which recognizes those who strive to make the world a better place, went to Peter and Joanne Kenny for their extensive charitable work in Africa. "It's easy for us to think about our own backyard," said Jeanette Heywood, vice president of membership services and planning for the Oakville YMCA during the morning ceremony. "It's really easy for us to think about the people who share our day to day lives, but it's very difficult for us to think that there is a different picture and that what goes on on the other side of the world we are responsible for because we are fortunate to have the means and the opportunity to help those who can not help themselves." During a presentation on the type of work he and his wife have done Peter Kenny noted that the charity work began with the simple concept that you help your neighbours in need, which steadily grew to the point where largescale philanthropy was involved. This work included the setting up of scholarships for women in Uganda to provide them with skills they could take to the job market. Y hands out peace medallion Living Gift Festival kicked off at Ten Thousand Villages By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER TO THE RESCUE: Keegan Smith takes part in the closing ceremonies of the YMCA of Oakville's Peace Week celebration. As another holiday season approaches, Ten Thousand Villages is offering Canadians a way around the rush through its Living Gift Festival. Launch on Nov. 29, each Living Gift sold helps Ten Thousand Villages' parent organization, Mennonite Central Committee, carry out important relief and development work. Here's how it works: friends and family receive a detailed description of the present chosen for them, while the actual gift goes to people who need it most. In 2007, $1.29 million was raised through Ten Thousand Villages during the Living Gift Festival -- an increase of more than 30 per cent over the previous year. As a non-profit, fair trade organization, Ten Thousand Villages provides vital income to people in the developing world by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. "Unique presents are hard to find. At Ten Thousand Villages, we're offering creative gifts that help reduce the effects of poverty at the same time. Each purchase makes a considerable difference, whether you spend $25 or $250," said Frieda Kehler, manager of Oakville's Ten Thousand Villages store. Four special projects make up the Living Gift selection this year, including specific items like seeds as well as lasting services like classroom support. Prices range from $19 to $300. The Living Gift Festival kicked off at Ten Thousand Villages stores across the country last weekend. As part of the launch, customers will experience music from distant countries and food sampling.
