26 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 21, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Korean youths give back with concert By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A group of local Korean musicians will put their talent on stage on Saturday, Nov. 22. What's interesting about the group, however, is that it is all local high school students who met through volunteering with the Halton Multicultural Council (HMC). The concert will not only benefit HMC, but is the first joint effort of the new group the youths have established -- the Oakville Korean Youth Council (OKYC). Theirs would be the first youth group dedicated to providing support and networking to Korean youths living in town. As they discovered in meeting through their own volunteer work with HMC, that is a growing number. "This is the first time we'll be putting on a concert," said group spokesperson, 17-yearold Barbara Kim, who is in Grade 11 at Appleby College. "In the last three years, there has been a doubling of the Korean population in Oakville," said Christina Choi, a youth settlement worker with HMC. According to Choi, Korean people are moving to Oakville "because they believe it is a very safe city for children and it's a nice place to live." Choi's role is to assist youths in successfully settling in their new community and school. There are several Korean churches operating in Oakville and Kim said there's a large Korean population among the student body of Iroquois Ridge High School. However, the eight youths who will all be performing at the upcoming concert, all attend different schools in town. Through HMC, the teens met one another and discovered they shared not only their Korean heritage, but also the ability to play a musical instrument. Kim, who has been working with HMC in an after-school program with younger children, actually donated her musical talent to HMC before -- she sang O Canada at the HMC's Multiculturalism Day celebration. Her sister, Lilias, who is in Grade 4 at St. Mildred's Lightbourn, also sings. Other concert performers will include: John Hahm of White Oaks Secondary School who plays guitar; Stephanie Kim of St. Ignatius of Loyola who plays piano; Jennifer Kim, also of Loyola who plays the flute, Christopher Ahn of Holy Trinity who plays violin and Jane Hahm who attends Emily Carr Public School and also plays flute. When a similar concert they organized for the children in the after-school program was successful, the youths came together to create both another concert and a youth group. Kim said the newly-established OKYC is open to any local youth who shares a Korean heritage. Kim, herself, was born in France, and lived in Korea prior to moving to Canada nearly five years ago. Canada was a good fit for the family whose members all spoke French, said Kim. The two-hour concert will be followed by a reception and a $10 donation is suggested. For information about the OKYC or tickets to the concert, contact okyc2008@gmail.com or the HMC located at 635 Fourth Line, Unit 48 or 380 Dundas St. E. at www.haltonmulticultural.org, 905-8422486 or 905-257-1555.
