When Obama came on stage, there was no controlling the crowd's cheering. He said, "Hello Chicago" and the crowd went wild. In his deep baritone and distinct voice he charmed America for the next 20 minutes. In those 20 minutes, I saw tears running down the face of the middleage white man, who flew in from San Francisco on Tuesday to be part of this occasion. We saw the young African American woman cry and watched her husband hug her. We saw an older black man grinning so wide and look so proud as if he had personally conquered the world. The young people were yelling and crying and jumping with excitement. When Obama finished his speech, I saw, the white man hug and congratulate the African- American couple, everyone shook hands with each other and everyone was congratulating each other. After the rally was over, the crowd spilled over from Grant Park to Michigan and Congress avenues. All you could see was hundreds of thousands of people walking and talking and screaming with excitement. Some were chanting: "We made it." Some were just too shocked, some were contemplating the future, and some were just plain drunk with euphoria. Everyone was well behaved. No one seemed to want to ruin a good thing. For us the the day started at 6 a.m. on Tuesday and ended at 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Two words -- amazing and electrifying -- describe the experience. We can only hope that Obama is able to fulfill his commitment to America and the rest of the world. It would be almost impossible, but he has the mandate to get the United States out the mess of last eight horrible years. Let's hope and pray for our American brothers and sisters. Mayor Rob Burton states we have "to get Oakville closer to being the most livable town in Canada". The fact is we are going the other way. In my community in southeast Oakville we are losing four of our six community schools and our hospital. We have no community centres as the communities north of the QEW do. In fact, I take my kids to the Clarkson pool as not only is it the closest community pool, but it costs less than the Oakville Parks and Rec programs. To boot, we have just gone through a property assessment increase, so that 4.41 per cent property tax increase will be closer to 6 or 7 per cent including the increase in the assessment. Why am I to pay this extra money, when I am losing my community? We are being stripped of our community hubs (our schools) with no promise of a community centre to come. I ask the mayor to balance the facilities, services and programs in our town so the south has equal programs as the north. Because right now, I'm giving you an extra $500 out of my pocket for less facilities in my area --tell me how that makes sense. ANDREA CUTHBERT ideas.
