The longtime Minor Oaks Hockey Association volunteer, who passed away two weeks ago in her 79th year, will be remembered for her influence on the MOHA system. Joyce created a juvenile division in MOHA's house league program, introduced the concept of team jackets for all players in the association, and was known for ensuring all house league players received equal ice time. "My brothers and I, as well as many others within Oakville, considered her the godmother of minor hockey in Oakville," said Joel Bowen, one of Joyce's four sons. "She always had the concept that we should reward kids for having a good season, coming out and having fun." Joyce's impact on minor hockey wasn't limited to the local level. She was the first female president of the Tri-County Minor Hockey League, and the league named a division after her. Joyce suffered her spinal injury 35 years ago while serving with the navy. A disc in her spine imploded and crushed her spinal cord, causing her to lose feeling in the back of her legs, but she insisted on walking with a cane until last year. The same can't be said about the two clubs above them, however. Oakville lost 7-4 to the divisionleading Georgetown Raiders Friday at Joshua's Creek Arenas, falling to 8-2 on the season. The Blades' other loss this year came to the 9-2-2 Burlington Cougars, a 6-2 decision Sept. 13. Oakville, which rebounded to edge the Streetsville Derbys 5-4 Sunday in Mississauga, was whistled for 44 minutes in penalties against Georgetown.
