"In addition, we will stop the tar sands development until we know exactly what impact it has on the environment. We're also going to make polluting against the law. We want to invest in a green economy and green collar jobs." Poland said there does not have to be a choice between the environment and the economy. Both can win, he added. "I think we can have a stronger economy when we are working with the environment," he said. "A carbon tax is not going to destroy the economy. Harper's own folks did studies that showed it would actually help the economy, but they have buried that report, like they have buried so many others. There are countries around the world that have been working with a carbon tax for 10 or 15 years and their economies are going very strong." When asked for their individual opinion on Canada's involvement in Afghanistan, Brown justified her decision to not attend the March 2008 vote to extend the mission to 2011. "I personally did not vote for the extension of the war until 2011," she said. "They were going to bring our soldiers home in February 2009, but Mr. Harper wanted to extend it and the Liberal party agreed, but I did not vote in favour because I could not do it. People are dying over there." Young criticized her response, asking why she wasn't present in the House of Commons for the vote. He said it was the previous Liberal government that sent over Canadian troops in the first place. "In 2006, when Mr. Harper became prime minister, there were 2,500 brave men and women from Canada fighting in the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan," he said. "Bonnie Brown did not speak out at that time, but she's saying it now, but she could have stood up in Parliament and said `No.' She could have said `No' Brown dismissed his claims dur"We do not believe in the politics in The Oakville Beaver, but she didn't. ing her turn to address the public at of personalities, we believe in the polThe Liberals now act as if they have the start of the night. itics of ideas," she said. nothing to do with it."
