www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 3, 2008 - 15 Solar Fair organizers promoting energy conservation (Solar) power to the people. The Halton Environmental Network (HEN) wants to convince regional residents that the sun's power is cost-efficient and environmentally friendly and is organizing a Solar Fair to get that message across. The fair will be held tomorrow from 9 a.m.noon in the auditorium of the Halton Regional Centre, 1151 Bronte Rd. in Oakville, just north of the QEW. Eight solar vendors will be displaying and discussing their solar water heating and photovoltaic (solar electricity) systems. The Solar Fair is part of the Halton Residential Solar Project (HRSP), which hopes to encourage the installation of solar-powered systems on the roofs of homes throughout Halton. "Solar hot water systems reduce a household's (natural) gas or electricity use for water heating by approximately 50 per cent annually," Lisa Seiler, HRSP project co-ordinator, said in a news release. The starting price for a photovoltaic (solar panel) system is about $12,000. Solar hot water systems cost significantly less. BurlingtonGreen chair and HRSP team member Kurt Koster likes the Ontario government incentive for generating solar electricity. "The provincial Standard Offer Program pays 42 cents for every kilowatt-hour of solar electricity you generate. Compared to the five or six cents per kilowatt-hour you pay for your electricity currently, that's a good deal," said Koster. The first series of public meetings for the HRSP is currently underway, with meetings last week in Oakville and Burlington attracting 175 attendees. Meetings were held Wednesday at the Milton Sports Centre and yesterday at the Georgetown Cultural Centre The Oct. 4 Solar Fair is a follow-up to the evening meeting series, but people who could not attend last week's meetings are welcome to attend. An information session will run from 9-10 a.m., including an overview of solar power and the HRSP. Guest speaker will be Ken Traynor of the Toronto Renewable Energy Co-op (TREC). Traynor was a key organizer of the West Toronto Initiative for Solar Energy (WISE), which saw 86 solar panel systems installed in one ward of Toronto in 2007. At the fair there is an opportunity to hear from solar power system vendors from 10 a.m.noon. Attendees can take in vendor presentations every 10 minutes with time for questions.
