www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 3, 2008 - 9 Do visits from political stars have influence over local voters? By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville has proven to be a popular destination for politicians and star candidates this election campaign. This week was no exception, as Mark Garneau made a quick stop in town on Monday to speak to students at Sheridan College. Although he is best known as the first Canadian in space, the purpose of his visit was political. Garneau is running in the upcoming federal election under the Liberal banner in the Montreal riding of Westmount--Ville-Marie. He spent most of his 45-minute visit speaking about what he sees as the strengths of the party's platform and its vision for Canada. "I got involved in politics because I feel that I can make a contribution," he said. Garneau said fixing the economy is a priority for the Liberals, but he warns that there are no overnight solutions. One idea he has for turning the economy around is giving a boost to science and technology initiatives in the country. "Since my first flight, I have spoken in hundreds if not more than 1,000 schools about the importance of Canada being a player in the world of science and technology...," he said. "Canada is in the middle ranks as far as innovation is concerned. Back in 2000, I remember the Liberals saying we wanted to be in the top five for innovative countries, and we haven't made that yet. It isn't because we don't have the basic building blocks to be a more innovative country. We do. We have a tremendously well-educated and skilled workforce, but we have not yet brought together those blocks to build that structure that allows us to be more innovative." Garneau admitted that he is known as "the science guy," but he stressed his love for the arts, citing his four-year term as president of McGill Chamber Orchestra in Montreal. He said he was a true music lover, adding that he listened to classical music, specifically Baroque music, while he was in space. He also talked about the importance of helping the environment, which he realized while floating thousands of miles above the planet in the shuttle. "We've talked, as Canadians, a lot about the environment and we need to act on this," he said. "I spent 28 days in space looking down at my planet and I've been around it 450 times. It is an object of incredible beauty, but it is also our home and it is a place we are damaging." As someone who boasts three space missions, 11 honourary degrees and a stint as president of the Canadian Space Agency, Garneau is one of the party's high COSTCO/VOLVO EVENT September 2, 2008 In early September, Volvo of Oakville will be launching a new initiative.
