OAKVILLE'S BEST REAL ESTATE SECTION INSIDE! www .oakv illebe aver.com Beaver THE OAKVILLE A member of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Vol. 47 No. 118 Tree bylaw takes root immediately By Kim Arnott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Starting today, you'll need to pull out a tape measure before you rev up your chainsaw. Under a new Oakville bylaw now in effect, property owners are required to notify the town if they intend to cut down trees over 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter. A permit is required to chop down more than four trees in a year, or any single tree larger than 76 cm (30 inches) in diameter. In voting for the bylaw on Monday night, councillors said they hope the new rules won't significantly hinder residents from altering their properties, but will put an end to developer clear-cutting. Ever look at a photo and not recognize yourself? Would you recognize Oakville? Residents -- and local government, social agencies, educators, doctors and others -- will get their chance to find out Tuesday, Oct. 7 when the Community Foundation of Oakville (CFO) releases its Vital Signs report. According to CFO officials, there will be surprises, facts we already know, others we know, but can't prove and. most importantly, it will offer a roadmap to the future -- if we choose to follow it. The CFO is hoping everyone who reads Vital Signs, will do what they can with the report that has been a year in the making. The CFO itself will use it to set priorities for annual grants. The United Way of Oakville is eager to see the report, so it, too, can direct funding to areas of need. The Chamber of Commerce will use the report's positive information to sell Oakville to new businesses. It will take identified areas of concern to local government to lobby for improvement. Residents can compare their own lifestyle experiences to those reported and may make decisions to take action at home.
