MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER Street hockey tourney to raise awareness, funds for Rett Syndrome A 3-on-3 street hockey tournament will be held next weekend to raise awareness and fund research, outreach and education of Rett Syndrome. The tournament, titled Silent Angel Street Hockey, will be the first fundraiser of a month-long program in Oakville. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton has proclaimed October to be Rett Syndrome Awareness Month. The tournament is open to everyone over 18 years of age and will be held Oct. 5 in the parking lot at Canadian Tire on Dundas Street and Trafalgar Road. Food and drinks will be provided, and participants will receive attendee bags containing gifts, coupons and door prizes. Rett Syndrome is the most disabling of Austism spectrum disorder. Figure skaters start season early The Oakville Skating Club couldn't wait to introduce the changes to its programs this year. The club began its season last week, earlier than usual, in hopes of enhancing the development and advancement of its skaters. Ths season will run through the end of March and will provide an increased focus on skating and movement on the ice, from the preschool sessions up to the competitive skaters. New this year is the club's FastTRACK program. This program is designed to move skaters quickly through the CanSkate program and into the main figure-skating stream. Skaters may be invited ing to lace up their skates again can try to regain their old form through the adult freeskating/dance sessions each Thursday evening. The Oakville Skating Club will continue to offer Learn to Skate sesions for parents and tots, preschoolers and CanSkaters as well. The competitive skating season begins in a couple weeks, so skaters are already busy training and preparing for their first event.
