OT stuck with the defending Halton champion Irish for a half, but Notre Dame pulled away in the third quarter and prevailed 40-24. BURLINGTON -- If you didn't believe the erroneous scoreboard in the Notre Dame gym, the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils actually led the defending Halton senior girls' high school basketball champion Fighting Irish 12-10 at halftime Monday. Even if you did believe the scoreboard, OT was tied with the Burlington powerhouse after 16 minutes of action, and the Devils appeared poised for the upset. Those dreams were quickly dissipated by the Irish, which outscored OT 24-2 in the third quarter and went on to record a 40-24 victory. But the first-half showing was more reason for optimism for the Red Devils, who are now 2-1 on the season and will face another tough test today (Wednesday) when they host the Holy Trinity Titans. "(Notre Dame has) been the Halton champions for God knows how long," said OT's Allison McManus, who led the Devils with nine points. "This was a good game, a good experience. I think it's positive." Notre Dame was mistakenly credited with two points for a missed layup late in the first half. The error in scoring didn't end up mattering, however, as the Irish cranked up its intensity and used a full-court press in the third quarter to force turnover after turnover, leading to easy baskets. "My guards became extremely frustrated," said OT head coach Joyce Vaive. "The rest of (the players) feed off that and then they start to force (shots) and panic. It was panic and lack of experience."
