NO CREDIT All-new Focus With it, users can operate their cell phone or music player using either voice commands or the vehicle's steering wheel or radio controls. The Focus comes in three trim levels for 2008-- S, SE and SES. Standard features on the base S model include AM/FM single CD/MP3 player with four speakers, power front disc and rear drum brakes, power rack and pinion steers, five-speed manual transmission, rear defroster, tinted glass, two 12V power points, 60/40 split rear seat, an anti-theft system and SIRIUS satellite radio. My tester was a top-of-the-line SES model that priced out at a reasonable $25,914 including $1,100 destination and delivery charge. While the base SES lists for $19,999, the tester included a four-speed automatic transmission ($1,150), sport group ($1,495) that included a spoiler, chrome exhaust tip, 16-inch aluminum wheels, exterior door handle and mirror body colour, ambient interior lighting and other features. Also included is a power moonroof ($1,000) and a few other features. Standard on the SES are four-wheel anti-lock brakes with traction control, fog lamps, heated front seats, map lights, auto-dimming rear view mirror and the Ford Sync system. Power for the Focus comes from a 140 hp 2.0-litre Duratec DOHC inline four-cylinder engine. Power is up marginally thanks to a new air intake system and cooling system, both of which improve efficiency. Overall, the car is 45 kg (100 lb) lighter than the 2007 model, also helping performance. Meanwhile, fuel economy is rated at 8.5L/100 km (33 mpg) city and 5.7L/100 km (50 mpg) highway. On the road, the Focus responds eagerly when you touch the throttle. The ride is smooth and quiet, steering is responsive and all controls are well placed and easy to use. I don't use a Bluetooth connection for my cell phone, nor do I own a digital media player (I know, I know, showing my age!) so I can't speak to the Sync system. However, younger, more tech savvy customers will appreciate the system. Overall, the Focus appears to be a competent, wellpriced car that should compete well in the small car segment, an area that is sure to see continued growth with gas prices on the rise.
