www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 19, 2008 - 3 Find out about going solar Have you thought about installing a solar hot water system or a photovoltaic system to generate electricity? The Halton Environmental Network (HEN) is undertaking a project, which will see solar panels installed on homes throughout Halton as early as this fall. This project is known as the Halton Residential Solar Project (HRSP). The HRSP team will host a series of meetings to outline options, an overview of solar technologies and the HRSP, with plenty of time for questions. The meeting in Oakville will take place Monday, Sept. 22 from 7-9 p.m. at Oakville Town Hall at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. in the Oakville/Trafalgar Rooms. Contact Lisa Seiler at 905-827-5989. In Burlington, it will be Thursday, Sept. 25 from 7-9 p.m. at Burlington Central Library, 2331 New St., Holland Room. Contact Cathy Risdale at 905-635-4033. In Milton, the meeting will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 7-9 p.m. at the Milton Sports Centre, 605 Santa Maria Blvd., Banquet Room. Contact Tara Bonin at 905-875-4045. The Halton Hills meeting is set for Thursday, Oct. 2 from 7-9 p.m. at the Georgetown Cultural Centre, 9 Church St., Gallery. Contact Carolyn Martin at 905-877-2579. A culminating meeting and solar fair will be held in October. There are a number of benefits to going solar. The environmental benefits include curbing climate change, reducing smog from coal plants during times of peak summer energy and reducing dependence on polluting sources of energy. For solar hot water systems (solar thermal), there is also the benefit of a relatively quick payback, depending on your family's hot water usage. The payback for photovoltaic (PV) is longer, due to the high cost of PV equipment, but the Ontario government has the most generous incentive in North America for PV grid-connected systems through the Standard Offer Program (SOP). For information, e-mail info@the-hen.net or go to halton.ourpower.ca. Leave the car at home on Monday The Town of Oakville is encouraging residents to leave their car at home on Car Free Day, Monday, Sept. 22. Try walking, biking or taking public transit for a chance to win great prizes. E-mail the Town at carfree@oakville.ca and explain how you are going car free on Monday. Entries will be placed into a draw to win a bicycle (first prize), an Oakville Transit monthly pass (second prize) or a Smart Commute gift pack (third prize). "This is a great community initiative where each of us can do our part to make a difference. Car Free Day not only benefits our environment, it also supports an active lifestyle," said Cindy Toth, Director of Environmental Policy. International Car Free Day is an annual event to reduce dependence on automobiles and promote safer, healthier transportation solutions. It aims to raise awareness of the environmental hazards of car use and to encourage people to use more sustainable modes of transportation. The Town's participation in Car Free Day is one of the many environmental initiatives currently underway, including Make Your Move and the Active Transportation Master Plan.
