Wilkins, United States Ambassador to Canada will give the keynote address at the Oakville Chamber of Commerce's 54th annual President's Dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 23. It will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Oakville Conference Centre at 2521 Wyecroft Rd. "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to host Ambassador Wilkins," said Chamber President Gerry Popp. "Our economy is inextricably linked with that of the United States. With only weeks until the American presidential election, our members and the community will be very interested in hearing the comments and opinions of such a high profile and influential member of the American government," said Popp. John Nay U.S. Consul General in Toronto stated that "Ambassador Wilkins was delighted to receive the invitation from the Chamber and is looking forward to his visit to Oakville." Since his appointment as ambassador, Wilkins has travelled widely throughout Canada to better understand the country, its people and its culture. Wilkins emphasizes the positive relationship shared between the United States and Canada. Significant issues, such as the softwood lumber dispute have been resolved since ambassador Wilkins was appointed more than three years ago. There are ongoing discussions between the Canadian and U.S. federal governments on a number of matters ranging from protection of intellectual property and copyright, to border security and infrastructure issues. The chamber's president elect Aby Alameddine said, "There has been a great deal of excitement around having Ambassador Wilkins as our keynote speaker. This will be one of the largest events in our chamber's 59-year history. This will be the chamber's 54th annual president's dinner. The event will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. Forum discusses struggle for peace in Russia Professor Metta Spencer will be the first speaker in the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR) new series of free public forums on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The event will be a public forum discussion on the struggle for peace and democracy in Russia. It will take place from 7-9 p.m. at St. Jude's Anglican Church located at 160 William St., downtown Oakville. "Spencer will speak about her soon-to-be published book titled Bears and Doves, which shows the impact of the international peace movement on Soviet military policies," said OCCPEHR chair Mervyn Russell. Before retiring from the University of Toronto, Metta co-ordinated a program in peace and conflict studies. Her introductory textbook, Foundations of Modern Sociology, was published in nine editions. Since her retirement in 1997, she continues as the editor of Peace Magazine. Another book, Two Aspirins and a Comedy: How Television Can Enhance Health and Society, was published in February 2006.
