24 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 13, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Girls' hoops, boys' volleyball to open high school fall season The 2008-09 Halton high school sports season will get underway next week with the opening of the girls' basketball, girls' field hockey, boys' volleyball and boys' football campaigns. Girls' basketball and boys' volleyball will be the first sports to get started, with many of the seniors and juniors beginning Monday. Girls' basketball In senior girls' basketball play, games involving Oakville teams include the T.A. Blakelock Tigers at the Abbey Park Eagles, the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils visiting the Robert Bateman Wild, the Holy Trinity Titans hosting the Loyola Hawks, and the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Local junior action Monday will feature Blakelock at Abbey Park, Loyola at Trinity, and Iroquois Ridge at Notre Dame. All junior contests are slated to begin at 3:30 p.m., with the senior games to follow at approximately 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders will be home to the Aldershot Lions, the White Oaks Wildcats will host the E.C. Drury Spartans, and the King's Christian Collegiate Cavaliers will entertain the Burlington Central Trojans in senior play, all 3:30 p.m. starts. Loyola and Abbey Park will join Notre Dame, Nelson, M.M. Junior games begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by senior contests. Tuesday, Richardson Division senior games include Aquinas at Aldershot and King's Christian at Central. White Oaks will visit Drury in junior play. Those games are all scheduled for 3:30 p.m. starts. Girls' field hockey Girls' field hockey will start Wednesday. OT will visit Trinity Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. start, and Abbey Park travels to Aquinas, Loyola goes to Assumption and Blakelock is at Notre Dame Friday. Senior Division 3 games next week include White Oaks at Lester B. Pearson 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Ridge home to Central Friday at 4:30 p.m. The juniors will open their seasons the following week. Everrett, a senior at West Virginia, scored the Mountaineers' goal in a 1-1 tie with Washington State and was named the tournament's most valuable player. Her goal was the 34th of her collegiate career and moved her into a tie for third on the school's all-time goal scoring list. Cicchini, a senior midfielder, had the game's only goal in West Virginia's 1-0 victory over the host, Tennessee. She was named to the tournament all-star team. Everrett and Cicchini were both members of the West Virginia team that won the Big East conference championship last year.
