www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 29, 2008 - 19 JJ and friends are out to bash breast cancer Four Bronte neighbours will come together to bash breast cancer Sunday and help fellow neighbour Jaap-Joost Breijinck (JJ) raise the funds necessary to take part in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer 60-km walk, Sept 6-7. In June, JJ realized he was short half of the required $2,000 to take part in the event. Immediately, he started to think of ways to raise the funds, and with the help of his wife, Lynn Chadwick and a few neighbours, the idea of hosting a street party was brought to life. The neighborhood is inviting the Oakville community, adults and kids alike, to take part in their Bronte Neighbours Bash Breast Cancer event, Sunday, Aug. 31, 2-6 p.m. "There'll be live music from The Beat Heathens band, a silent auction, book sale and barbecue," said Chadwick, adding that kids will be able to enjoy supervised swimming, ice-cream, bouncy castle, face painting and free loot bags. Moreover, pet owners will be able to microchip their pets for half price. While it would normally cost $50 for this procedure, Dr. Dieter Schmidt, of Bronte Road Animal Hospital has offered to microchip pets for a small fee of $25, which will go to JJ's funds for the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Although he is short of the funds, JJ has committed himself to the event in a way that others cannot. He quit smoking, started exercising and lost weight. "He has been brilliant about the whole thing (Weekend to End Breast Cancer walk)," said Chadwick took part in the previous two walks, but it was her participation last year, that motivated JJ to sign up for this year's twoday event. "My wife did it last year and I spent a few hours on the side and I just became very emotional," recalled JJ. "It's just an emotional get together." That same day, JJ signed himself up. Since then, he has attended the coaching and training camps. His wife will not be taking part in the run this year, rather she, along with their nine year-old son, will be watching, supporting and cheering on JJ for a good cause. The 60-km Weekend to End Breast Cancer walk will take place over the span of two days, with participants totaling 30 km each day. It will benefit The Princess Margaret Hospital and The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research. The Bronte Neighbours Bash Breast Cancer event will take place at 531 Tipperton Cres. -- intersection with Waterford and Trevor. LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER HELPING THE CAUSE: JJ Breijinck, far left, is taking part in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer 60km walk. He is short on his fundraising, so his wife, and four other neighbors, including Ivana Spurio and Alan Monro, seen here, will hold a Bronte Neighbors Bash Breast Cancer event on Saturday, Aug. 31 on Tipperton and Waterford streets. Chadwick. "No one believes he'll be taking part because he used be a heavy smoker, but when he signed up last year, he quit smoking and committed to training."
