www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 2, 2008 - 9 Oakville coastline looks generic Continued from page 5 there is a volunteer arm to the coast guard," said Vezina. "If you did a survey in the general public today most people would say, `Search and rescue, the coast guard is doing that.' There would maybe be a few people who have heard of the coast guard auxiliary, but don't have much of an idea about the scope or the training that a volunteer goes through or that they dedicate time away from their families during weekends to train and to do patrols." Vezina noted that TOWARF was chosen for the video because they have a good number of volunteers, good equipment and because Oakville's coastline is able to stand in for just about any part of Canada. "We wanted this to be generic, so people in Newfoundland will think this could be a scene in Newfoundland and people in B.C. will think, `Yeah that could be here,'" he said. "We needed an area where you have open water, you don't necessarily see too much of the coast line and you have a boat that you would see in different waters. Like on the St. Lawrence River, you would see a boat like that and also in the Maritimes." The filming lasted almost the entire day of July 18, as both nighttime and daylight scenes were required. For Mark Dowinton, the current commander of TOWARF, and his fellow volunteers, being part of a video that will soon be seen nationwide was well worth putting the time in to take part. "It's nice to be selected for something like this and we pulled out every stop to make it happen," he said. "We liked putting Oakville on the map. Unfortunately these videos won't show Oakville because they're to be used at the national level, but what you do see is TOWARF on the side of the boat." Vezina noted the videos should be distributed to TV stations by September with audio from the video's possibly making their way into radio public service messages.
