www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 25, 2008 - 31 Oakville actor brings life to role of burnt out rock star By Stephanie Taylor SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER July Warehouse Clearance SOLID WOOD DINING TABLE & 6 GENUINE LEATHER CHAIRS $ Sale Unbeatable Savings up to Instant Star actor Craig Warnock is wrapping up his time playing Paegan Smith, but shows no signs of slowing down. In its fourth and final season, Instant Star, which airs on CTV and was recently picked up by MuchMusic, is winding down with its final episodes. Although the show finished taping last November, fans are just now going to see the closing storylines. Warnock gave The Beaver a sneak preview of what his character will be facing in the upcoming episodes, "Paegan Smith comes back into his own, if you will, in terms of performing and he appreciates that he still has a little fire in him, so he accepts an offer that is coming to him. The character himself is pretty much a burnt out rock star," he explained. Warnock points out that the show is full of clichés about the rock and roll and entertainment industry. The show at times pokes fun at the clichéd Hollywood, with a previous episode seeing main star Jude Harrison jumping on a couch a la Tom Cruise, adding an element of humour to the teen drama. Although the directors, Bruce McDonald and Graeme Campbell, gave the actors space to improvise if they so chose, Warnock feels the scripts were so well written they didn't feel a need to change or add anything in. Warnock first appeared on Instant Star as a guest character for a couple of episodes and was asked to stay on for the ending of season three and full time for the fourth season. "The character was extremely colourful. There were certainly perimeters to where he could go as a character. He had some limitations. I could see him at one stage being a wild out of control rock star," said Warnock. "I believe he had to tone things down from a life perspective, so that he ultimately had to make a decision, so he decided not to drink anymore, whether it be for health reasons or not, he was trying to live better. He is spiritual on some sort of level, I still haven't figured that out, but he's definitely into herbal teas and meditations," he explained. "Those kind of limitations are there from a character perspective. I kind of wanted to stay in the boundaries of what I had originally come up with as a character. But on the flip side, there is still a little spark that burns within him." Warnock has recorded two songs as Paegan Smith, Born Ready and Stupid Star, which may be released to the public, recorded with Tim Welch of Silent Joe, who produced the show's musical score. Warnock says the show's message is always key and there is always a good moral in the storyline. "What excites me are new and different challenges. I would definitely be Craig Warnock considered a good character actor more than anything else," he explained. He also noted that four seasons is a great run for a Canadian show. Warnock is proud to be a Canadian actor and just as proud to live in Oakville. He lives with his wife, Patricia Warnock, and their two children and couldn't be happier to be settled in the Oakville community. Warnock is currently starting to shoot a new movie in Toronto titled St. Roz, with an all-Canadian cast. Warnock feels that most exciting character he gets to play is always the newest role he is learning and preparing for, although he notes that Smith has definitely been his most colourful. He has also just obtained the rights for a massive feature film based on Cliff Thorborn, a 1980 world champion Snooker player from British Columbia. Warnock and Thorborn, along with writer Andrew McNeil are putting together the feature, and Warnock is also toying with the idea of playing one of the characters in the film. Their hope is that the feature will be released fall 2009. This is the second feature Warnock will be acting as producer. Warnock thanks the fans of Instant Star for all their support, stating that they are reason he continues to act. You can check out the latest episode of Instant Star Sunday night at 7p.m. on CTV.
