www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 23, 2008 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Doctors too quick to medicate RE: Sara Carlin: A life cut way too short, Oakville Beaver, July 19. The tragic death of a young person like Sara Carlin should be a wake-up call to the medical profession. Medication (drugs) plays an important role in our quality of life when prescribed and taken properly. It seems nowadays it is easier to prescribe a pill to cure a problem rather than dealing with the symptom through counselling or non-medical therapy. Obviously the drug is quicker, but does the medication cure the problem or mask the problem? This is the tough decision that doctors have when a client comes into their office. I am not criticizing doctors, but everyone has a responsibility, including the individual and the family. Paxil is an anti-depressant and when a person is on antidepressants and then takes a depressant like alcohol or other drugs (whatever they may have been) it is counter-productive and dangerous. That, plus the fact, that the Paxil was increased and sleeping medication was prescribed, as well, is totally irresponsible. No matter what age you are a life balance is important. The 24-hour pie is a good example: eight hours work, eight hours rest/recreation and eight hours sleep is an ideal model. While it may seem unrealistic for many people, young and old, today people are stressed to the max and without some sort of balance in our lifestyle, the pressures can be too much to bear. The medical profession should be better trained to deal with psychological issues, as well as physical issues, and be able to tell the difference and treat accordingly. As a parent and grandparent, my condolences go out to the Carlin family. KEN ROBERTSON RETIRED CAW/FORD EMPLOYEE FAMILY ASSISTANCE CO-ORDINATOR DON'T PAY RETAIL! The obvious answer is to use cloth diapers, as we did, as not only does that solve the problem, but also avoids the addition of the disposable diapers into the Town's land fill. This is another example of modern society's need for convenience over common sense and social responsibility, just like polluting the air while waiting in a drive-through line up at the local coffee shop. In terms of diapers, the Halton Region Health Department has identified that diapers will not pose a health hazard if handled and stored properly over the two week period: · Residents are advised to bag waste, keep bag tied tightly and/or store in a container with a tight fitting lid where possible to prevent insects, wild animals and other pests from gaining access. · Residents are also encouraged to store garbage in a cool location where possible to keep odours to a minimum and are encouraged to practice proper hand washing after handling garbage. Approximately 1.7 billion disposable diapers are thrown away every year in Canada. This accounts for approximately 2.5 per cent of all residential waste going to landfill. I hope that we can all do our part to help reduce, reuse and recycle when possible and participate in the new waste collection program. Halton Region staff are continuously taking feedback from residents on the new waste collection program and are currently looking at opportunities to enhance diversion from the landfill.
