26 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 19, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Sweet 16 for Dolphins One of the smallest swim teams in the country could make a big splash at next week's age group nationals in Calgary. The Dolphins Swim Club will send 16 swimmers to the all-Canadian meet, representing 40 per cent of its membership. Included in that group are several potential medalists. Sinead Russell, who recently set a national record in the under-14 girls' age group, is expected to contend for national gold. Other medal contenders are Maggie Burns, Lauren Dixon and Cole Van Ommen. Sinead and her Olympic-bound brother, Cameron Russell, combined to win five medals at the recent Open Buffalo International swim competition. Sinead won gold in the 200-metre freestyle and 200m individual medley while adding a silver in the 800m freestyle. Cameron, 20, took bronze in the 100m and 200m freestyle events. The Russells were not the only Dolphins to earn medals at the meet. Marina Biasutto, Isabelle Nat, Jacqueline Baillie and Sinead Russell swam to gold in the girls' 4x200m freestyle relay, setting a meet record in the process. The girls' 4x100m freestyle relay team of Camille Maisonnueve, Dixon, Nat and Baillie earned silver. Baillie also made her national age group qualifying time in the women's 200m freestyle, cutting more than three seconds off her previous time. Other Dolphins swimmers to reach event finals in Buffalo were Alex VanOmmen, Peter Kruzyk and Burns. Shoppers can support Little League tourney Whole Foods Market and Oakville Little League have teamed together to help defray the costs of this year's Canadian Senior Little League Baseball Championship. In an effort to reduce impact on the environment, Whole Foods Market gives 10 cents per bag to customers who re-use their own shopping bags for their purchased groceries. Customers have the choice to accept their cash refund or to donate the cash back to the store's chosen non-profit organization. For the months of July and August, that chosen organization will be Oakville Little League, which will host the national senior little league championships from Aug. 1-8. Teams competing in the championships will represent British Columbia, the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, as well as the host senior all-star team from Oakville Little League. The winning team will move on to represent Canada at the 2008 Senior Little League World Series next month in Maine.
