www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 18, 2008 - 31 Girl's Night Out serves up laughs against cancer Comedy fundraiser for Oakville team in Weekend to End Breast Cancer Women who like to giggle and fight breast cancer with some belly laughs are invited. Award-winning Canadian comics Laurie Elliott and Debra DiGiovanni will take to the stage for the Girl's Night Out Comedy Event on Tuesday, July 29 at O'Finn's Irish Temper and Whiskey Lounge, 136 Church St. in downtown Oakville. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. with the one-hour performance starting at 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25. The fundraising event is being organized by three Oakville women -- Christine Reidy, Deirdre Thomas and Victoria Hayes -- who are participating in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting The Campbell Family Institute at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Sept. 5 through 7. The trio is looking to raise more than $6,000 for breast cancer research. The two stand-up comediennes have just finished the first leg of their cross-Canada Girl's Night Out tour along with U.S.-based comic Kristeen von Hagen. Both Elliott and DiGiovanni have also participated in Laugh Lines over the years -- an annual all-female comedy fundraising night for the Princess Debra DiGiovanni Margaret Hospital. "I thought it was a great idea and I know from experience that when it comes to this particular issue, women really want to show up and (show their) support," said Elliott about the fundraising evening. Elliott, a two-time winner of Best Female Stand-up at the Canadian Comedy Awards and Gemini Nomination, will deliver a "mixed-bag" of comedy, including lampoon- Laurie ´Elliot ing male/female relationships. DiGiovanni has performed on NBC's Last Comic Standing, MuchMusic's Video On Trial and is winner of Best Female Standup at this year's Canadian Comedy Awards. "The show in Oakville is a great night benefitting a great cause," said DiGiovanni. "I don't think our show has a real theme -- but I might mention my boobs once or twice. I'm always thrilled to raise funds for cancer research and especially breast cancer research. I think, in my position as a comedian, it's the least I can do." There are 125 tickets for sale (105 seats and 20 standing room) for the Girl's Night Out Comedy Event. Tickets can be purchased before the performance at O'Finn's or through Deirdre Thomas at 905-815-9460.
