The skin cancer screening clinic will be open to all spectators from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The clinic is located in the Spectator Village, between the first and fourth fairways. "We are pleased to partner with the Canadian Dermatology Association in reaching out to the golfing community with information on skin cancer prevention and early detection," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "Many forms of skin cancer are preventable or can be cured if detected early." More than 12 Ontario dermatologists will volunteer at the Open, which will be the largest skin cancer screening team ever assembled for a screening at a sports event in the province. The dermatologists will conduct skin checks and provide sun safety education to tournament spectators. At a similar event in Markham last year, of the 45 people checked, 17 people, or almost 40 per cent, were referred to a physician or dermatologist for further testing or treatment, including one person found to have melanoma. Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that is highly curable if found early. "Golf is a great way to be active and enjoy the outdoors," noted Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region's Medical Officer of Health. "Unfortunately golfers, in general, are a group of people who are at increased risk of skin cancer because they regularly spend many hours out in the sun, often during times of the day when the sun's ultraviolet radiation intensity is very high." There are simple ways golfers can protect themselves. These include: · using a hat that protects the face, ears and neck · wearing UVA/UVB protective sunglasses · providing their own shade with umbrellas or waiting for play in shaded areas · using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher · wearing lip balm Sunscreen should be applied at least 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapplied every two hours. Nosal advises that clothing that is loose fitting, tightly woven, light weight and covers arms and legs can also act as a protective barrier against the sun's UV rays.
