The first chain-driven model bicycle was invented around 1885, more than 50 years after the founding of Knox Presbyterian Church. While the notion of a long-distance bike-a-thon would be unfamiliar to the original founders of the church, the concept of giving back to the community is nothing new. "Knox has an extraordinary tradition of community involvement," said Rev. Mike Marsden, one of the eight cyclists in Saturday's big event. "Whether it's opening our doors at Midnight Madness, aiding local charities, or delivering Christmas gifts to needy families, Knox is a vibrant part of life in Oakville. We take great pride in our strong roots in the community." The bike-a-thon is a fundraiser for Home Suite Hope, an innovative charity that meets the needs of the homeless in Halton. To date, the Knox Cycling Team has raised approximately $2,000. "Presbyterians don't do anything by half measures," said Marsden. "The team members have biked more than 1,000 km during the last 10 weeks training for the big day." The bike-a-thon will start and end at Knox Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Lakeshore Road and Dunn Street. The ride will begin bright and early at 6 a.m., and will take between eight and nine hours to complete. The Knox Cycling Team, in their distinctive yellow jerseys, will bike as far as Niagara-On-The-Lake, returning some time between 2:15 and 3 p.m. The entire community is invited to welcome the team at the finish line. "In true Presbyterian fashion, we expect a loud and raucous welcome on Saturday," said Marsden. "Everyone is invited to join us at the church as we end our bike-athon." Every kilometre travelled is symbolic of one year of Knox as a faith community in the heart of Oakville. Every dollar raised will benefit members of the community who have fallen on hard times. In this, the Knox Cycling Team continues a 175-year tradition of Christian compassion at Knox Presbyterian Church.
