And, just in case it did, the top-seeded Buzz definitely didn't expect to have to play the fifth and deciding game on a neutral floor. But that's exactly what happened last night (Tuesday) in Bowmanville, thanks to a ruling by the OLA after the Buzz and Lightning were unable to agree on a series schedule. (Game 5 of the series began after the Beaver's press deadline; for results of that contest, visit www.oakvillebeaver.com.) The 480-kilometre distance between Oakville and Akwesasne necessitated playing two games at one venue the weekend of June 28-29, followed by three games (if necessary) at the other venue last weekend. Having earned home-floor advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs by virtue of its 17-3 record, Oakville requested to begin the series June 28-29 in Akwesasne and then return home for Games 3-5. The Lightning, however, said its home arena was not available June 29. As a result, Oakville hosted the first two games of the series, posting 10-8 and 9-7 victories at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. The series resumed last weekend in Akwesasne, with the understanding being that, if necessary, a fifth game would be played in Akwesasne Monday after CHRIS KORNACKI / OAKVILLE BEAVER See Both page 33 JUST SHORT: Brantford Bobcats infielder Carey Thomas tags Oakville bantam tier 1 Angels baserunner Renee Helmer before Helmer reaches second base during Sunday's final of the Angels' annual Summer Classic softball tournament.
