The 40-member Environment Club at the Glen Abbey school earned gold standing as an Ontario EcoSchool. "This is an amazing achievement as this is our first year participating in the program. I believe only three schools in the Halton Catholic Separate School Board received this honour. We are very proud of all of the efforts of our students, staff and parent community," said St. Matthew Grade 1 teacher Nancy Guerin. On June 25, Susan Paradiso, the Halton Separate Catholic board science curriculum consultant and representative for the Ontario EcoSchools program, presented a certification plaque and a seal to the school. Guerin said the environment club has set an example in the school community. The club has raised funds to purchase materials that would create more shaded areas for the school. The members also introduced Tupperware Tuesdays, and reduced the school's energy consumption by ensuring that lights and monitors are off when they are not needed. On June 4 representatives from Ontario EcoSchools -- an environmental education program that looks at the way schools are run and what students learn -- walked through St. Matthew to assess its environmental efforts. "They were very impressed," said Guerin. "It then appeared certain the school would be qualified under the program, however it wasn't sure if it would be silver or gold. To celebrate the team's effort, the school hosted a pizza party for its environment team. Its 40 members received certificates to commend them on all of their continuous hard work. The members ranged from Grade 3 to 8 stu LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER See School page 17 GOOD AS GOLD: St. Matthew School in Glen Abbey is now certified as a gold Ontario EcoSchool.
