The cultural heritage value or interest of the Smith Houses lies in their being a rare pair of adjacent houses of two generations of a local family of Scottish origin, 533 having been built first and 531 built almost twenty years later. The homes were originally built in an orchard setting. The Smith Houses are of architectural value as a rare pair of shale stone houses built by two generations of the same family at the beginning of the 20th Century homes built with the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement which apart from minor cosmetic alterations are largely unaltered from their historic appearance. 533 Kerr Street is a unique house in Oakville, and is reminiscent of the Smith Family's ancestral home in Aberdeen shire Scotland. 531 Kerr Street is a shale stone house built with the influence of the craftsman style which was popular in Canada in the early decades of the 20th Century. The Smith Houses have contextual value as rare survivors of the early 20th Century settlement in the Kerr Street Area. The hikes are weekly activities for young explorers to discover amazing features about nature in their own backyard...all summer with the help of a park ranger. Tyke Hikes take place every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. The events are designed for kids five years of age and under, though older kids are welcome too. A park ranger meets participants just outside the Nature Centre where the adventure will begin. It's good exercise and all trails and paths used for the hikes are stroller and wagon friendly. Daily vehicle permits cost $13.85 per vehicle. There is no additiona fee to participate in the program. This program is being offered in the Day-Use Area.
