The inaugural Music for Mutts benefit is this Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Moonshine Café, 137 Kerr St. It will feature a number of musicians playing various styles of music, with all proceeds going to the Oakville and District Humane Society. "The Oakville shelter is a phenomenal shelter," said Lisa Winn, concert organizer and a member of the kennel staff at the Oakville Humane Society. "They do everything they can to help every animal that comes through the door. It is an incredible place to work and it is amazing to see the effort put into getting every animal a home. And not just a home, but the proper home for that specific animal." The group of performers donating their time for the cause is Alfie Smith (blues), Shawn Brush (country/folk/pop), Kim Koren (pop), Susan Applewhaite (folk), as well as Winn (folk). "They instantly said yes when I asked them because they all love animals and this was a chance for them to play with people they know and like," Winn said. The Moonshine Café is licensed and seats up to 60 people. Children are welcome to attend the show if accompanied by an adult. Admission to Music for Mutts is with a $10 or higher donation at the door. "I don't really want to put an estimate on how much we are hoping to raise," Winn said. "I hope people come and fill the place for this great cause." The event will include door prizes and raffles. Members of the Oakville Humane Society will also be on site to offer information about adopting a pet. "There will be pictures of animals for adoption and lots of information about the shelter," Winn said. The Oakville Humane Society is a non-profit organization that assists animals in Oakville, Milton and the surrounding area that have been injured, abused, sick, abandoned or are in need of rescue. More than 5,000 animals pass through its doors each year. "Not a lot of people know about the shelter and it doesn't have a lot of money because it is not funded by the city," Winn said. "The shelter has been here for a long time and is in dire need of a new building and money." While the event is called Music for Mutts, proceeds from the concert will help the shelter care for all types of animals. "We chose the name because it is cute, but the money will go to dogs, bunnies, birds and cats and any other animals that come through the door," Winn said. This year, students entered more than 70 films in the competition. The annual festival provides a forum for students to communicate their ideas through the creative use of video. This year's gala was the seventh awards evening and involved approximately 200 elementary and secondary students. "The Eddies is our version of the Oscars," says Jeff Bowman, communications/multimedia administrator at the Halton District School Board and one of the festival organizers. "Each year the judges are amazed by the quality of these student-produced films. Students use digital camcorders and do the post-production work on computers which allows them to develop their visual literacy skills and understanding of film as a communication medium." The award winning films are being added to The Eddies website, and will be available for viewing at www.theeddies.ca.
