www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 2, 2008 - 3 Community expecting school to be rebuilt Continued from page 1 Corbacio. "We also have to get permission to demolish the old building from the town." The building was constructed in the 1960s and was originally called Gordon E. Purdue Public High School. The Catholic board purchased it from the public board in 1990 for the sum of $1. It has required many renovations since it exchanged hands, with the Catholic board ultimately deciding to build a completely new structure on the site. "It isn't in that bad of shape, but there is a high expectation from the community to replace it," Corbacio said. The current plan put forward by the board is to build the new school at the corner of Lakeshore and Dorval, with an anticipated opening in September 2010. Demolition of the old school would be done in portions, with the three-storey south classroom portion coming down first so that construction can commence. Portables would be used as temporary classrooms for certain subjects until the new building is complete. Once the new school is open, the remainder of the old school will be demolished. "The library, music rooms, cafeteria, science labs, gymnasium and specialty rooms are in the remaining part of the building, so the school will operate as a normal school, other than the fact there will be portables," said Corbacio. The current school population at St. Thomas Aquinas is about 950. The new school will be larger and will be able to hold roughly 300 more students. Earlier this year, the trustees approved redrawing the boundaries for Oakville Catholic secondary schools to evenly distribute students between St. Thomas Aquinas, Holy Trinity and St. Ignatius of Loyola. The new boundaries will come into effect in September 2010. "We wanted three schools with equal enrolment so each school will have roughly 1,245 students," Corbacio said. "The extra kids will be coming (to St. Thomas Aquinas) from the new areas that are being expanded right now, with most from the area west of Bronte road." The board held two public information meetings on June 4 and 5 to inform parents, students and neighbourhood residents about the new facility. Corbacio said that the majority of the approximately 100 students and parents at the June 4 meeting were excited about the new features of the school. The 25 neighbours at the information meeting the following night, however, expressed concerns on various aspects, such as green space, traffic flow and public use of recreational facilities. "We were expecting to hear concerns and they are typical of any new development or redevelopment in a neighbourhood," Corbacio said. Maintaining green space is one area that is being addressed, he stated. "Where the new school is located, some trees will be required to be removed to accommodate the new school, but the vast majority of the trees will be remaining as is," he said. "We will be adding more trees to the site, so for every tree taken down, we will be putting more trees back. There will actually be more vegetation and green space than there was before." Corbacio said the new building and corresponding recreational facilities in particular will be a wonderful addition to the neighbourhood. "Our current thinking is that on the corner of Rebecca and Dorval, we will relocate the sports field and it will be a full, multiuse sports field with a running track and we are looking at placing an artificial turf surface," he said. "The new facility is going to be a tremendous benefit to the south Oakville community because there will be more indoor and exterior facilities and when the school is not using them, the community is able to use them." Planners are also taking traffic flow into account, Corbacio added. "The additional students will be bussed in, which will reduce traffic," he said. "There's a traffic study that has been done to improve the number of entrances and exits on the site, and there'll be more parking provided so the traffic shouldn't spill onto the street."
