For the 2009 model year, the new base models in the range will have the same Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) as the previous base models. MSRP for the Legacy 2.5i PZEV sedan will be $28,195; MSRP for the Legacy 2.5i PZEV wagon will be $29,195. The new PZEV model in the Outback range is based on the popular Outback Touring model and will have a MSRP of $34,895. PZEV is the cleanest running gasoline-powered car on the market anywhere, meeting standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The PZEV designation means it runs 90 per cent cleaner than the average car on the road. Compared to the average 2009 car that meets all Canadian emission laws, the PZEV improves in four areas. First, a charcoal canister is placed in the air intake to absorb evaporative hydrocarbons that could escape in the form of unburned fumes in the crankcase, cylinders and intake manifold. Second, PZEV fuel injectors close tighter than standard injectors to cut fuel leakage into the intake manifold. Third, the worst emissions occur during startup when the catalytic converter is not up to its 300-degree Celsius operating temperature. Subaru puts in an Engine Control Module (ECM) that delays ignition timing to let the combustion process continue, providing hotter gases faster to the converter to bring it up to temperature. Lastly, the catalytic converter contains Subaru Canada has adapted PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) technology to this 2009 Legacy sedan and a finer mesh that makes for a larger con- wagon and Outback Touring (shown) making them among the cleanest gasoline-powered cars on the road. tact area.
