The program, which has been running for 14 years, began when Oakview Funeral Home Director Don Clarke came up with the idea of placing Canadian flags on the graves of veterans to mark Canada Day. Since then, the program has spread to all six cemeteries in Oakville with around 150 graves being marked with Canadian flags each year. The process of finding all these graves has not been an easy one with the Town of Oakville and the Bronte and Oakville Legions being enlisted to help put together a list of veterans who are buried in Oakville. Anyone with a relative buried in an Oakville cemetery, who believes they should be added to this veterans' list, can call 905-842-2252.
