Did you know... Let's face it- Canada is associated with some strange and downright hilarious symbols. The beaver, the world's largest rodent, is widely connected with Canada. When early European explorers arrived on our land, they noticed a rather large supply of furry, bucktoothed rodents. With this supply came a lucrative demand for hats. Our furry friends were close to extinction by the mid-19th century. Luckily for them, our European ancestors soon took a fashionable liking to silk hats. In 1975, a royal assent was given to an act proposing recognition of the beaver as a Canadian symbol. · The maple tree has made a large impact on Canadian culture. Trees are of great importance to Canadians. Maple trees provide valuable wood products, sweet maple sugar, and beautify our landscape. The maple leaf is, of course, the centerpiece for our beauteous flag, but it was not until 1996 that it was proclaimed an emblem of Canada. · "Canada", the name of our country is a symbol with an interesting tale. In 1535, two Aboriginal youths told Jacques Cartier about the route to "kanata". "Kanata" is merely the Huron-Iroquois word for "village". For lack of a better term, Cartier used "Canada" to refer not only to the village he sought, but also to the entire stretch of land before him. The name stuck, and the country officially assumed the name of Canada at the time of Confederation! · Canadian provinces may also be known for their official tartans. Each province and territory, except for Nunavut, has its own distinctive tartan. These designs are combined to form a maple leaf, symbolizing unity. · The image of the Queen's head has graced our money for a long period of time. Canada's link to England, and its allegiance to the Crown have prompted this, and other royal symbols to appear on a variety of Canadian paraphernalia.
